Pet Food Carb & Dry Matter Calculator

Enter the guaranteed analysis from the bag, can, or label. This version is designed to be cleaner, faster, and easier to use on mobile and desktop.

Use the preset buttons above if the label does not show moisture clearly.
If ash is not listed, 8% is used as the default.

Method used

Dry matter basis and carbohydrate by difference are used.
Dry Matter % = (Nutrient % ÷ (100 − Moisture %)) × 100 Estimated Carbohydrates as Fed % = 100 − (Protein + Fat + Fiber + Moisture + Ash)

What this calculator does

This tool estimates carbohydrate content from the guaranteed analysis on a pet food label. It also converts nutrients to a dry matter basis so foods with different moisture levels can be compared more fairly.

Why dry matter matters

A canned food and a dry food can look very different on the label because one contains much more water. Dry matter helps remove the water from the equation so you can make a more meaningful comparison.

Helpful reminder: This tool helps you read the label with more clarity. It does not tell the whole story of the food.

Important Notes for Pet Parents

Guaranteed analysis values on pet food labels are not exact laboratory totals. Protein and fat are typically listed as minimums, while fiber and moisture are usually listed as maximums. Because of that, carbohydrate values are estimated, not directly listed by the manufacturer.

If ash is not listed on the label, this tool may use a reasonable estimate. That can affect the final carbohydrate result.

This calculator is meant to help you understand a label better, but it does not measure ingredient quality, protein digestibility, amino acid balance, mineral bioavailability, calorie density, or whether a food is appropriate for your individual dog or cat.

A higher or lower carbohydrate number does not automatically make a food good or bad. The full nutritional picture matters.

This calculator is provided for educational and informational purposes only. Results are estimates based on the guaranteed analysis values entered by the user and should not be treated as a full nutrient analysis or medical recommendation. Pet food labels have limitations, and actual nutrient content may differ from estimated values.

If your pet has kidney disease, diabetes, pancreatitis, urinary issues, food sensitivities, unexplained weight loss, or any other medical concern, speak with your veterinarian before making major diet changes.

For the most accurate nutrient data, contact the manufacturer and request a full nutrient analysis, calorie content, and nutrient values on a dry matter basis.
