Pet Nutrition Questions, Answered Clearly

Pet nutrition should not be driven by fear, buzzwords, or whoever has the largest marketing budget. These answers are grounded in animal biology, established nutrient requirements, pet food labeling standards, and peer-reviewed research. Every dog and cat is an individual, so age, health history, body condition, activity, medications, laboratory results, and response to food must also be considered.

Why is my dog itching and licking its paws?

Food can contribute to itching and paw licking, but it is not automatically the cause. Environmental allergies, fleas or mites, contact irritation, yeast, bacterial infections, and other skin conditions can produce very similar signs.

When food is genuinely suspected, repeatedly changing brands is not a dependable test. A carefully controlled elimination diet followed by a food challenge is the more reliable approach. Everything the dog consumes must be considered, including treats, chews, table food, flavored medications, and supplements.

Persistent redness, odor, sores, hair loss, recurring ear trouble, swelling, or broken skin should be evaluated by a veterinarian. Nutrition cannot correct an untreated infection, parasite problem, injury, or other medical condition.

What is the best food for my dog or cat?

There is no single food that is best for every animal.

A sensible choice considers the animal’s species, age, activity, body condition, digestive tolerance, medical history, calorie needs, and any diagnosed health conditions.

Dogs and cats require appropriate amounts and proportions of amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, water, and energy. A food should be judged by its complete nutritional picture, not one ingredient or claim printed on the front of the package.

The right food should support an appropriate body weight, good muscle condition, normal stools, a healthy coat, steady energy, and the individual animal’s medical needs.

What does crude protein mean on a pet food label?

The word crude describes the laboratory method used to estimate protein. It does not mean the protein is raw, poor quality, or inferior.

The guaranteed analysis normally lists crude protein as a minimum percentage. That number does not tell you the protein’s digestibility, amino acid balance, biological value, or exact amount in every batch. It is one piece of information, not a complete evaluation of the food.

Why should wet and dry foods be compared on a dry-matter basis?

The percentages printed on a pet food label include the food’s water. This is called the as-fed basis.

Because canned, fresh, and raw foods generally contain much more moisture than kibble, comparing their label percentages directly can be misleading. Dry-matter conversion mathematically removes the moisture so the nutrient percentages can be compared more fairly.

Nutrient percentage ÷ percentage of dry matter × 100

For example, a canned food with 10% protein and 78% moisture contains 22% dry matter.

10 ÷ 22 × 100 = approximately 45.5% protein on a dry-matter basis.

Does the first ingredient tell me whether a food is good?

No. Ingredients are listed in descending order by weight, but their position does not reveal the food’s complete nutrient profile, digestibility, amino acid balance, ingredient quality, or suitability for a particular animal.

Fresh meat contains a large amount of water and may appear high on the list partly because of that moisture. Similar plant ingredients may also be divided into separate names, making each one appear farther down the list.

The ingredient list matters, but it should be evaluated alongside the guaranteed analysis, calorie content, dry-matter values, nutritional adequacy statement, processing method, and the individual animal’s needs.

Does a senior dog automatically need less protein?

No. Age alone is not a reason to automatically restrict protein.

Older animals can lose lean muscle, so adequate, digestible protein may become increasingly important. A healthy senior dog should not automatically be fed as though kidney disease is present simply because the dog is older.

Protein decisions should be based on muscle condition, body condition, appetite, calorie intake, activity, laboratory findings, health status, and the quality and digestibility of the protein.

Should protein be lowered when a pet has kidney disease?

Kidney disease requires an individualized nutritional plan. It should not be managed by looking only for the lowest protein percentage on a bag.

The pet’s stage of kidney disease, blood phosphorus, urine findings, muscle condition, appetite, calorie intake, hydration, protein losses, and other laboratory results all matter.

Dietary phosphorus control is an important part of chronic kidney disease management. Protein quantity, quality, and digestibility must also be balanced against the need to preserve muscle and maintain adequate food intake.

A pet with diagnosed kidney disease should receive regular veterinary monitoring because nutritional needs can change as the condition progresses.

Are grain-free foods bad for dogs?

Grain-free only tells you that certain grains were not included. It does not tell you whether the complete food is nutritionally superior or inferior.

The relationship between diet and non-hereditary dilated cardiomyopathy is complex. The FDA has received reports involving both grain-free and grain-containing diets and has stated that it does not have definitive information showing that the reported diets are inherently unsafe.

It is therefore not scientifically responsible to claim that every grain-free food causes heart disease or that the presence of grain automatically makes a food protective.

The complete formulation, nutrient availability, ingredient proportions, processing, feeding practices, genetics, medical history, and the individual dog all matter.

Are cats just small dogs when it comes to nutrition?

No. Cats have distinct metabolic and nutritional requirements.

Cats evolved as obligate carnivores and have specific requirements for nutrients such as taurine, preformed vitamin A, arachidonic acid, and sufficient animal-derived protein.

A feeding approach that may be appropriate for a dog is not automatically appropriate or nutritionally complete for a cat. Cats should be fed according to feline biology, not treated as smaller versions of dogs.

Can I make a balanced homemade diet using recipes found online?

Cooking for a pet can be done correctly, but combining meat, vegetables, rice, eggs, oils, or supplements does not automatically create a complete and balanced diet.

Published evaluations of homemade recipes have found frequent nutrient deficiencies, excesses, and improper mineral ratios. A recipe may look wholesome while still failing to supply everything the animal requires over time.

A long-term homemade diet should be precisely formulated for the individual animal. Ingredients and supplements should be weighed accurately, and the recipe should not be casually altered.

Can supplements make an incomplete diet complete?

Not reliably.

Nutrients interact with one another. Adding individual supplements without understanding the complete diet can create excesses, deficiencies, improper ratios, or competition between nutrients.

A supplement should have a specific purpose, an appropriate dose, and a clear place within the animal’s complete nutritional plan. More ingredients do not automatically mean better nutrition.

Can changing food replace veterinary care?

No. Nutrition is important, but food cannot diagnose disease, remove parasites, treat an infection, repair an injury, or replace appropriate medical testing.

Sudden weight loss, repeated vomiting or diarrhea, breathing difficulty, collapse, seizures, severe lethargy, refusal to eat, major changes in thirst or urination, blood in the stool or urine, or rapidly worsening symptoms require veterinary attention.

Good nutrition and good veterinary care should support one another. The goal is not to choose sides. The goal is to make better decisions for the animal.
